It was such a delight to work with Alex Hover on this drawing. When I first came across his work I immediately had flashbacks to my childhood. And I hear many people say how bad the smell is that accompanies a blacksmith’s work. I say that smells have a lot to do with memories. When there is a great memory attached to something, ALL the smells are wonderful, no matter how bad they may seem to anyone else. And vice versa, if an experience is bad, the nicest scent becomes awful (example: bad old relationships and the perfume someone was wearing). I love the smells around a farrier’s hard work. It reminds me of my wonderful childhood and I wish I could bottle up this smell and access it whenever I need it most. Maybe this drawing will do something similar.
